Uruguay – France 2-1. 1966 World cup. Group stage
This is the only win of Celeste in the 1966 Globe cup in England. Uruguay capable from the group stage thank you to two goaless draws, in opposition to England and Mexico respectively. In quarterfinals, they misplaced seriously against Germany, mainly since of scandalous refereeing. This was the only game of the tournament, played at White Town staduim in London, as all the other 5 matches of this group took location at Wembley. This extremely day Wembley curiously hosted dog racing, which was thought to be as much more essential point than the football globe cup alone! awful defence by the french during Uruguay’s goals
what a team with history
No Stupid Vuvuzelas at that time. Keep it that way!
I noticed compared to today’s modern goal keepers, these were very lazy ones in 1966… and football seemed heavier than what we have now a days…
Uruguay was still plaiyng in 2-3-5 in 1966? should be an 4-2-4 or a 4-3-3!
Pedro Rocha El mejor
Number 12 for France is Jean Djorkaeff, the father of Youri Djorkaeff of 1998 and 2002 Word Cups. Like father like son. Great tradition.
This was the only game in London not to be held at Wembley, this took place at the White City Stadium-now sadly gone.It was a Friday night game,as greyhound racing was the sport at Wembley that night.
Thanks Farerets. I always wanted to watch the old matches of my national team (uruguay). Pedro Rocha was maybe the best uruguayan players ( I heard that from brazilians) but in my country he has not the appreciation he deserves. I think people has bad memory with those that did not win a world cup.

@Farerets I remember Uruguay gave the best Brazil team of all time a very good game in the semi-final. Just wonder what might have happened if Rocha had been involved also. I was amazed that they only allowed domestic based players to take part. What would happen if the same rules had been applied by other countries.
@jokergame @jokergame I think that those teams in 1966 & 1970 were more or less equal. But the 1966 team lacked Luís Cubilla, who played in Argentinian league then and, of previous strange rules, unavailable for selection for the Uruguayan team, which were composed by domestic players only. Luís played in 1962, 1970 & 1974 World cups, most significantly in 1970 of course.
@jokergame Yes, Pedro Rocha was injured only 10 minutes into the first group game against Israel and missed the rest of the tournament, where Uruguay reached the semifinals.
Pedro did participate in four World cup tournaments: 1962, 1966, 1970 & 1974.
@Farerets I remember this team where Rocha was the golden boy but your team was much better 4 years later when I think Cubilla was the star but I don’t remember Rocha in that team. Did he play? Was he injured? He would have been in his prime in 1970.
Dear ElCucho somewhere between1962-67 period.- Early in the 60s and even prior to that- Scores of 7-3 in a game of soccer (Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt-final Copa de Europa 1960)were not just unknown but quite regular. Then someone came up with the bright idea of tightening it up @ the back-which is the principal reason now, why lot’s of games are dull and tedious as a spectacle!!
Hi Ivan. Football gives second chances. Uruguay and France are in the same group at SouthAfrica2010. Hope same score repeats.
Wow, this was decades before I was born. It is nice to see some of those things that my father and grandpa always talked about Uruguay but my younger generation hasn’t enjoyed much. Amazingly Uruguay was playing with more forwards than defenders! when did it switched all the way around?
it was black age of french football (1958-82)
Hey Alejandro, I hope that you read you initial message on this board and probably consider the matter once again… 😉
2 at the back,3 in the middle and 5 up front –AHH,!!those were the days!!.
We´ll watch the 2010 qualifying game France vs Faroes next Wednesday12th. Hope you are right…
…never say never. Even France is not the team it once was.
I hope Celeste will…
1930 – 1950 – 1980 – 2010 – 2030! 😉
The Faroes will unfortunately never make it to the finals… Uruguay is probably a small country but still 65 times bigger than the Faroes!
